Various folk-related projects appear in Devon from time to time. This page give a brief summary of some of those projects. More details can be found on www.devonfolk.co.uk.
This Farming Life - a special compilation of film, folk songs, readings and photographs with live performance by Tom and Barbara Brown - is a collaborative project, instigated by Bill Grainger of Beafordarts and Villagevoice and presented in association with South West Film & Television Archive and Umber Music.
A project from 2004 to
research, design and perform an evening of story, song and music, inspired by
the old ways on Dartmoor.
Six performances in Scoriton, Plymouth, Ashburton, Great Torrington, Chagford
and Okehampton took place over the weekends from 21st February through to 6th
March 2004. The shows were free, and were funded by a Tarka Country
Millennium Award, which also provided funds for publicity and research of
stories and songs. The performers are Susan Taylor, Simon Williams, Howard Frey
and Julia Thomas.
[Ed: Cornwall Songwriters have a policy of performing a project for a
maximum of about two years - Unsung Heroes has now gone out of performance - we
await the next project with eager anticipation!]
Unsung Heroes
A powerful 90 minute musical documentary drama from Cornwall Songwriters (who
previously brought us 'The Cry of Tin') telling the story of the
Lost Gardeners of Heligan who went off to WW1 and of the 22 who went only 6 came
back. Consequently the gardens were lost. It's their story told in their words
with some cracking songs and plenty of emotional highs and lows. See
www.lyngham.co.uk/unsung_heroes/heroes2.html for more information.
The production was premiered at Heligan in June 2004. The audience is strongly
encouraged to join in the choruses of the songs. Production, direction and
script by Mike O'Connor, with full co-operation from Heligan Gardens.
