Folk on BBC Radio
Go to
www.bbc.co.uk/radio and
select the Music tab to the right of the window. Then select Folk & Country. (At
some initial stage you will probably need to install the BBC Radio Player, but
it's so long ago I did it I can't remember exactly how this side of things
went.)
Although BBC Devon and Cornwall no longer have
their own radio folk programme on the radio, a wide range of such programmes is
available online live and to play again (for up to 7 days) from various BBC
regions. A
broadband connection is recommended for this. So there's more to folk on the BBC
than Mike Harding on Wednesday! The BBC's folk website
www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/folk has loads
of UK tour information.
Radio Britfolk
is an
online, developing resource dedicated to folk programmes. A selection of current month's
programmes is available free of charge, while archived programmes are accessible
for a small subscription. See
www.radiobritfolk.co.uk.
Local/National/International - Mr Red has a radio page on www.users.waitrose.com/~cresby/radio.htm ( http://cresby.com) listing all the local folk radio programmes vaguely in the area Shrops/borders Wales southwards, plus many national and international links I haven't even begun to look at yet (e.g. US radio stations with online folk programmes...).
Dartington College of Art's Soundart Radio 87.7 FM
Soundart Radio is now webstreaming at
www.dartington.ac.uk/soundart (or
www.myspace.com/soundartfm). The weekly schedule which includes Tree Holdaway's 'Eclectic folk' Tues
3-4pm and Merlin's folk and roots programme Weds 8.30-10pm is now available
online.
Transmits 24/7 to Dartington and parts of Totnes, but the range will
increase when full community broadcasting commences. Soundart
was awarded a 5-year community radio licence by Ofcom in Feb 07 so the
Totnes/Dartington area will have its own arts-based local radio station
(not-for-profit) within 2 years of that date. See Ofcom's
announcement
here. Soundart Radio's full application can be read
here.

This was how Soundart Radio first announced its intentions to the local
folk community
[Harberton Folk e-circular 19/10/06]
"We are setting up a community radio station for the Totnes area and beyond - a
non-profit, non-commercial fm radio station which will encourage listeners to
make their own radio programmes and become involved with the running of a
permanent radio station. It will have a broad editorial base catering for local
musicians and artists and we would like to hear from anyone who would be
interested in promoting the local folk scene 'on air', e.g. by sending us CD's
of your music, recording your own gigs or presenting a weekly folk magazine
show. No previous experience of radio is necessary. Please get in touch by
emailing Nell Harrison at
soundartradio@dartington.ac.uk."
Phonic FM 106.8 FM - Exeter area and online
(successor to the temporary annual Vibraphonic FM from previous years)
"Roots & Shoots" 6-8pm Mondays - An eclectic mixture of folk/roots music from Devon and the
world. In time we'll be featuring live sets from some of the best folk
entertainers in and around Exeter.
Further details can be found on our online blog:

Martin Hodge and Martin Henning"
Bayfm 107.9 (www.bayfm.co.uk) runs
in the Exmouth area during the Exmouth Music Festival (late May).
Merlin (from Soundart Radio) presented two shows on Mons 21st/28th May 8-10pm in
2007.
