| Until 2002, the draft electoral register for Harberton (covering precisely the same area as this website) used to be displayed in St Andrew's Church porch. The situation has now changed, as explained in the following by Elizabeth Tucker, Electoral Administrator at South Hams District Council - (01803) 861129. She stresses that this is current legislation, which can of course change again. |
"The unrestricted availability of the electoral register has given rise to
widespread concerns by members of the public. A recent court case, in a
different part of the country, has resulted in the restriction on the sale
of the register of electors and the disclosure of information contained therein
without the permission of the elector.
The Electoral Commission have advised Electoral Registration Officers nationally
not to sell copies of the Electoral Register for any purpose whatsoever until
such time as new legislation is made or further guidance issued by the
Department for Transport Local Government and the Regions. However, the
Register must be available for inspection in each electoral area.
The advice given concerning inspection is that the Register of Electors must be
made available for inspection but under supervision or in a controlled manner to
deter people from copying or 'helping themselves' to a copy.
The Register for Harberton is available for inspection:-
by arrangement with the Parish Clerk.
During normal office hours at Follaton House, Plymouth Road, Totnes,
Totnes Library.
Harbertonford sub-post office.
Any person inspecting the register may not make copies of any part of it or
record any particulars within it otherwise than by means of hand written notes.
I trust that this clarifies the situation."
