Devon Melodeons Update 5/06

Devon Melodeons Ahoy! Update

The beginners' melodeon workshops, started by Ed Rennie a couple of months back in Harpford in East Devon, South Zeal in West Devon and Lee Mill in the South Hams, are going splendidly. The series of progressive workshops, which are running from March until July, are well supported and the musicians are coming on leaps and bounds.

Ed is planning to resume the workshops at these locations in the Autumn. He is equally interested in starting workshops in different locations, where ever there is interest.

If you would be interested in attending beginners’ melodeon workshops, which are £10 for 1¼ hour session, please email Ed, using the title “Devon Melodeons Ahoy!” It would be handy if you could give your location, i.e. South Hams, East Devon etc so that if a number of people are interested in your area, new workshops could be set up.

The current workshops schedule is as follows:

East Devon:
17th May
28th June
19th July
Harpford Village Hall (map),
Harpford nr Newton Poppleford

West Devon:
7th June
5th July
South Zeal Methodist Church (map),

South Hams VENUE CHANGE:

Melodeons for Hire?

When Ed Rennie, through Spinningpath music, started the beginners' melodeon workshops (Devon Melodeons Ahoy!), he determined to locate them wherever demand was greatest. That way he figured the workshops would be more accessible and would reach more people.

The location issue being addressed, Ed realised that the workshops were still only accessible to those who owned, or could borrow, a melodeon. So, if you were interested in learning the melodeon, but didn’t have access to one, there’s currently not much option other than to buy one, which is a big outlay for something that may or may not suit.

Ed is now investigating whether a melodeon hire project, similar to that run by Katie Howson through the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust, would be appropriate in Devon. Through this scheme good quality instruments might be hired, at an affordable cost, on a monthly basis and, in conjunction with the workshops, music making could be accessible to more people.

This is where you come in. If you think such a project could be useful, please send Ed an email, entitled “Melodeon hire? Good Idea!” It would be handy if you could let Ed know your location, i.e. North Devon, South Hams etc. It would also be handy for Ed to have all the replies by the 31st May 2006.

This is a toe-in-the-water exercise at the moment, so you would be under no obligation by expressing an interest at this time.
